Avon, Avon Lake washed out by weather

ELYRIA – Jahiem Atkinson rushed for 164 yards on 27 carries as the Elyria Pioneers defeated crosstown rival Elyria Catholic, 27-7, in the season opener Friday night.
Atkinson’s 1-yard touchdown run in the third quarter put an exclamation mark on the victory as the Pioneers improved to 4-1 all-time against the Panthers.

Wide receiver Jaret Frantz, a Ball State commit, scored the Panthers only touchdown a 14-yard pass from quarterback Steven Navalinsky in the first quarter.
Elyria Catholic and Elyria will meet again on the gridiron next season in non-conference play.
Keystone 28, Clearview 6
SHEFFIELD TWP. – Gideon Lampron had 20 carries, a county-high 237 yards and two touchdowns as the Wildcats knocked off the Clippers in Lorain County League play.
Lampron had touchdown runs of 36 and 60 for Keystone and returned a 16-yard interception for a touchdown.
The Wildcats outrushed the Clippers 302 to -2 yards.
Robert Davis scored the lone Clippers touchdown in the second quarter on a 6-yard run.
Westlake 28, Brookside 0
SHEFFIELD – Kenny Groboslek rushed for 46 yards, including a 32 burst, but the Cardinals were held scoreless in their season opener for the second straight year.
Brookside had 86 yards on the ground in the loss.
Will Ostrowski led the Demons with three touchdowns and forced two interceptions on the defensive side of the ball. Arrington Taylor added the fourth Westlake touchdown.
Amherst 35, North Ridgeville 0
AMHERST – Mackey Perdue scored two touchdowns to lead the Comets in Southwestern Conference play. Perdue scored touchdowns on a 10-yard run and 5-yard run.
Tyler Brezina, Tyler Weatherspoon and Torre Weatherspoon added touchdowns for Amherst.
The Comets’ defense held the Rangers to 41 yards of total and one first down.
Firelands 9, Columbia 0
COLUMBIA STATION – Donald Crawford had the game’s lone touchdown – 40-yard run – as the Falcons downed the Raiders in LCL action.
Firelands added a safety in the first quarter from a Columbia snapped the ball into the back of the end zone.
Olmsted Falls 34, Midview 7
OLMSTED TWP. – Ethan Surdock threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to Joseph Bratkovich as the Middies fell in SWC play.
Surdock was 14-of-25 passing for Midview with 103 yards.
Ryan Feskanich and Andrew Parkowski had two touchdowns each for the Bulldogs.
Wellington 21, Black River 7
WELLINGTON – Jayden Skinner had 10 carries with 61 yards and a touchdown as the Dukes knocked off the Pirates in LCL play.
Kaleb Taylor added 56 yards on the ground for Wellington.
Joseph McKean had a game-high 26 carries for the Pirates with 67 yards and scored a touchdown in the second quarter.
Wellington had 243 yards of total offense, while Black River had 80 yards.
Sandusky Perkins 51, Vermilion 20
VERMILION – Ben Rini passed for 163 yards and two touchdowns for the Sailors in Sandusky Bay Conference play.
Rini’s first touchdown was a 19-yard pass to Justin Wagner and a 60-yard pass to Ethan Young.
Kanon Wright recovered a fumble for Vermilion and returned it for a 48-yard touchdown.
Euclid 14, Brunswick 7
BRUNSWICK – What a difference a year makes. In 2019, Euclid and Brunswick combined to score 63 points in a 42-21 Panthers win. On Friday, Euclid (1-0) walked away victorious once again, but defenses reigned on this rainy night – 14-7.
The game was tied at seven going into halftime, before the Panthers notched the final score of the night in the third quarter.
Brunswick (0-1) will try again on Friday when they host Benedictine in a non-conference matchup at 6 pm.
Avon 0, Avon Lake 0
AVON LAKE – Mother Nature had other ideas and postponed the Avon-Avon Lake game. The game will be moved to Saturday for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
Noted: Oberlin makes its season debut next Saturday vs. Clearview at Ely Stadium in Elyria. Kickoff is scheduled at 1 p.m.
