Blue Devils put fork in Battling Bees for first win of season

By KYLE CORNELL

BRUNSWICK – It took three years, but Brunswick has once again beaten county rival Medina.

The Blue Devils (1-1) and Battling Bees (0-2) traded blows early in the 28-21 affair, including Brunswick scoring on just the third play from scrimmage courtesy of a 48-yard touchdown catch by senior captain Jake Scherette.

After a Nicholas Vadini touchdown run early in the 2nd frame, Blue Devil Sophomore quarterback Ethan Fritz would go on to throw another touchdown pass in the second quarter to junior wideout JD Serwatka.

Medina battled back, with Junior Quarterback Drew Allar throwing two of his own touchdowns in the first half, both to standout senior receiver Luke Hensley, who would finish with 11 catches in the game.

Despite holding a lead into the third quarter, tragedy struck Brunswick when on a run out of bounds Scherette suffered a serious knee injury and was stretchered off the field.

The two-way player was picked up on defense by Junior defensive back and our Sports Desk Magazine player of the game David Hamrick. The junior first-year Blue Devil picked off Allar twice in the game, including once in the fourth quarter, and made a key stop of 4th down with under a minute to play to seal the win for Brunswick.

“Games on the line, you just have to stay with it, stick with and don’t fold”, said Hamrick, who also dedicated the win to Scherette.

“He has really just come in to our program and system and learned in really quickly, and become a true asset for this team“, said Head coach Mark Pinzone, who echoed praise for his defense, and for all the progress Hamrick himself has made during his first season with the team.

Overall, the home Blue Devils forced five turnovers in the win, which is their first of the season and first against Medina since 2017.

Brunswick now takes a (1-1) record to Ely Stadium to battle the (1-1) Elyria Pioneers.

Medina (0-2) will continue to look for their first win of the season next Friday at (1-0) Strongsville.
