Oberlin, Ohio — Following a lightning delay, the Oberlin College field hockey team surrendered four second half goals and fell to the conference power Kenyon College Ladies, 5-0, in its conference opener.
The Oberlin back line held its ground in the first half as senior captain Emma Broun and company made a number of big plays to keep the Yeowomen within one goal at halftime.
The lone Ladies tally of the first half came in the 10th minute when Sarah Metzmaier connected with Molly Keen who buried a long-range slapshot.
In the early minutes of the second half, Oberlin pushed forward and put some pressure on the Kenyon defense. The push forward led to an opportunity in the 36th minute, but a Kenyon defender was able to bat the ball away before first-year Bonnie Wileman fired on cage.
The Ladies would score all four of their second half goals off penalty corners. Metzmaier scored two of Kenyon’s goals in the final stanza and finished with a game-high five points.
Senior keeper Kennedy Kline played strong for the Yeowomen as she faced 26 shots on the night and finished with a season-high 11 saves.
The Yeowomen fall to 1-2 on the year, while the Ladies improved to 2-1 overall and are 1-0 in conference.
The Yeowomen will have an opportunity to rebound at home on Saturday as they host the Transylvania University Pioneers. The opening whistle is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Bailey Field.
