Big first-half powers Brookside in do-over win vs JFK

Storm delay sets up rare chance for two wins in a week

SHEFFIELD – The Brookside Cardinals (1-2) and JFK Fighting Eagles (0-3) waited ten days for this matchup.

Delayed by thunderstorms Friday night, the two teams squared off in a Monday matinee and did not disappoint. The host Cardinals scored 35 first-half points to earn a 49-20 victory.

Brookside sophomore Kenny Grobolsek got the scoring started with a 4-yard touchdown run two-minutes into the game. He’d finish with a game-high 4 TD’s. Kicker Jaycob Kolleda nailed the first of seven extra points.

Five minutes later – the Cardinals blocked a punt and sophomore Jake Montgomery returned it 40 yards for the second touchdown.

Another big play on defense for Brookside was an interception by Donovan Davis – giving the Cardinals the ball at the Fighting Eagles five-yard line. That set up the final TD before the end of the first half.

In his post game speech to his team, Brookside Coach Scott O’Donnell spoke about the unique opportunity before his team, “How does winning two games in a week sound?” They’ll hit the road to Oberlin to take on the (1-2) Phoenix this Friday.
